Bonus Teachings to Enrich Your Journey

Enjoy THREE valuable gifts to inspire you and deepen your practice

Dear friend,

In January of 2022, a living Buddha for our times left us: his name was Thich Nhat Hanh.

Nearly three decades ago, when I was in my late 20s, I had the good fortune to attend several retreats with Thich Nhat Hanh and later to spend time with him at his monastery, Plum Village, in the south of France. He was one of the first people I met who transmitted what it feels like to live in the present moment, and I was mesmerized by him and his teaching.

I was rapt by how he walked with an awareness of each step … how he took off his hat and carefully placed it next to the meditation cushion … how he sat in silence until speech was ready to emerge, as if of its own accord … how he invited the sound of the bell and reminded us that with the sound we were being invited to return to our true self. Each of his actions communicated total in-the-moment-ness.

Thich Nhat Hanh described living in such a way as “the art of mindful living,” and the key is to experience what he calls “body and mind as one.”

You probably know in your own experience what it is like for your mind and body to feel like two. I sure do. To me, it feels like there is a voice in my head that is going round and round about something I am not even sure I care about while not feeling much connection to anything else. Body? What body? Just a floating head commenting on life.

Living with “body and mind as one” is what Thich Nhat Hanh modeled and what he taught—a way to be so fully present that our mind and body are harmoniously in sync, graceful flowerings of the present moment.

Thich Nhat Hanh devoted his life to teaching the practices and skills that enable each of us to live with such immediacy and joy, contributing exactly what is needed in the moment. While he may no longer be with us, Sounds True was privileged to capture his unparalleled teachings in this online retreat. Any chance to learn with him is a chance to connect with the living dharma that he shared. Today, I am so grateful this series is available, both as a gift to you and to future generations.

Body and Mind Are One
An Invitation to Come Home to the Miracle That Is Your Life

Have you ever attended a teaching session or dharma talk, not knowing what to expect—and then found yourself so deeply supported, instructed, and illuminated that it changed you forever?

Those of us lucky enough to learn with Thich Nhat Hanh so often say: What a rare and exceptional teacher!

This soft-spoken Zen master radiated a sense of freedom and lovingkindness that is a dharma transmission in itself. Yet his clarity of intellect also stands out in all of his teachings: Thay, as his students called him, had a way of bringing into sharp focus the most subtle revelations of Buddhism—interbeing, emptiness, samadhi, the seeds of store consciousness, and more—all in a way that just “clicks.”

And the practices that he left us are refreshing and unique: simple breathing-based “mantras” that allow us to actually experience many profound concepts immediately and directly, on a felt level.

Begin with Your Embodied Presence

One core insight from Thich Nhat Hanh resonates powerfully in this program:

When your body and mind work together as one, you are fully and naturally present in the moment.

In our hectic modern world, it’s so easy to get caught up racing from one to-do to the next, planning this or worrying about that. We can get completely consumed by thoughts and unconscious habits that numb us to the sheer wonder of being alive—and to the suffering we create for ourselves and those around us.

Like a scientist, the Buddha searched for and identified these sources of unhappiness—and then provided clear instructions for uprooting their causes—to help us return home to our bodies, and to the wonders of life found only in the here and now.

Learn the Life-Changing Practices of the Buddha with Thich Nhat Hanh

In 2012, Sounds True had the rare opportunity to fully record one of his final—and finest—programs, taught here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

We then worked with his senior students to build a complete program based on these powerful teaching sessions. The result?

Body and Mind Are One: An Online Training in Mindfulness

Body and Mind Are One

This in-depth program brings you an unparalleled guided immersion with the venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, who practiced, shared, and radiated this wisdom for over eight decades.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout this online training program, you will learn the core concepts, meditations, and daily life practices for experiencing presence, healing, loving connection with others, deep insight into yourself, liberation from suffering, and the discovery of the ultimate realm of peace and wonder, in the here and now.

Open to the Wonders of Life
Through Mindfulness and Concentration,
the Gateways to Direct Insight

Session 1: The Energies of the Buddha
We have the power to connect with the present moment—and to see that everything we are looking for is available to us in the here and now. In this session we first come together with a chant to unify the sangha (the community of practitioners everywhere). Then we learn how mindfulness and concentration bring us insight, the doorway to the wonders of life.
Session Highlights
  • Three energies of the Buddha—mindfulness, concentration, and insight
  • “One in-breath and one out-breath”
  • Guiding the mind out of fear and sorrow … and home to the body

Experience a Reality Beyond Separation, Illusions, and Fear

Session 2: The Insight of Co-Being

One of the greatest insights that arise out of mindfulness practice comes from understanding and then experiencing co-being (or interbeing). In Session 2, we explore this concept and how it provides the ground for many foundational Buddhist concepts such as The Four Noble Truths, The Three Jewels, and karma.

Session Highlights
  • Transcending all notions
  • Death is nothing to fear
  • The Three Jewels—the Buddha, sangha, and dharma

Transform Yourself with Every Step You Take

Session 3: Mindful Walking

Every time you walk can be an opportunity for the energy of peace and mindfulness to penetrate your body. Walking mindfully allows you to touch the miracles available in the present moment. This session explores the practice of walking meditation and other everyday activities as a way to generate the energy of mindfulness.

Session Highlights
  • The miracle of walking on earth
  • Arriving with Every Step—a walking meditation
  • We are all continuations

Heal Your Emotional Wounds
Through Self-Kindness and Awareness

Session 4: Working with Emotions and Mental Formations

This session helps us to shine a light on our emotions and mental formations, so that we can guide and take care of them consciously. We’ll look at how the positive and negative seeds within can be tended to like plants in a garden, and how to work with our feelings and thoughts in a healthy and productive way.

Session Highlights
  • Working with strong emotions
  • Watering the positive seeds within you to bring them to fruition
  • Liberating ourselves from our afflictions

Reconcile and Reconnect with Those You Love
(and Those You Don’t)

Session 5: Mindfulness in Our Relationships

In relationships we gain the opportunity to develop compassion in a meaningful way. Here, we uncover how we’re hurt by our loved ones and how our actions in turn can hurt them. We’ll learn to shine the light of mindfulness on our relationships, to develop the insight of interbeing—experiencing ourselves not as separate, but as connected.

Session Highlights
  • Love without discrimination
  • To love is to be aware
  • Expressing our hurt and pain, to heal and allow our love to grow

Illuminate the False Beliefs and Perceptions That Cause Suffering, to Enter the Kingdom of Wonder and Joy

Session 6: Moving Beyond Our Notions

Through the insight gained from mindfulness practice, we discover that many of our core beliefs may not be what they seem—birth and death, sameness and otherness, even the notion of the “self.” This session helps us to begin perceiving an “ultimate reality” that lies hidden beyond our false notions, and to liberate us from the suffering that those ideas create.

Session Highlights
  • Relative and ultimate truth
  • “The Life of a Flame”—a teaching on “No Coming, No Going”
  • The Diamond Sutra, on getting out of discrimination, fear, and shame

Tend the Garden of Your Heart and Mind
to Germinate Its Many Blessings

Session 7: Watering the Seed of Compassion

Earlier, we learned that we have seeds lying within our store consciousness. When watered, they rise up to the level of consciousness. One of the most powerful seeds of store consciousness is compassion. Through heart-centered listening and loving speech, we germinate and grow it. Here, we learn ways to do this.

Session Highlights
  • The Five Mindfulness Trainings for transforming intolerance, anger, fear, and despair
  • Bringing about peace in the world
  • The practice of deep listening

Nourish Your Mind and Body …
and Continue Your Transformation for a Lifetime

Session 8: Liberation Through Mindfulness

This session first explores The Four Nutriments: how our consumption of physical and mental “food”—what we eat, read, watch, and listen to—strongly influences us. Then we close by taking a deeper look at The Three Doors of Liberation: specific objects of concentration that can ultimately free us from suffering.

Session Highlights
  • The Four Nutriments
  • The Three Doors of Liberation—emptiness, signlessness, and aimlessness
  • Closing teachings and practices

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you’re a total beginner or advanced meditator, we believe you’ll enjoy and gain so much from this program. If you’re new to mindfulness, this program is a perfect introduction—but the teachings go much further.

Unlike psychology-based meditation programs that focus mainly on stress reduction, the more comprehensive insights of Buddhism illuminated here target the roots of suffering and lead to exceptionally deep experiences of inner freedom.

First you’ll learn the basics of mindfulness, then learn to awaken further direct insights into what’s been called true liberation or enlightenment.

And if you find that this program isn’t for you, you can return it for any reason. See the Unconditional One-Year Guarantee info below.

Like many Sounds True customers and staff who are well versed in Thay’s teachings, you’ll likely enjoy this program. Why?

  1. Across eight decades, Thich Nhat Hanh evolved and refined his explanations and practices—and this, one of his last and best public retreats, conveys that lived wisdom.
  2. Thich Nhat Hanh’s presence and energy grew both subtler and more inspiring over time. The beautiful video production of this program reflects our team’s commitment to bringing you the most direct experience of his abilities possible.

So, if you’ve only experienced Thay’s wisdom in earlier books or audios, you’ll be in for a treat.

Of course, if you’re not satisfied with this program, simply request a refund. See the Unconditional One-Year Guarantee info below.

Likely not. Even before his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1967, Thich Nhat Hanh committed himself to bringing these practices and insights to those of all religious faiths. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and those of many other traditions have benefited from his efforts.

In fact, Thay led many retreats with US veterans of the Vietnam War, to heal the wounds that soldiers and his own fellow villagers both suffered during the conflict.

For Christians in particular, this program explores the strong parallels between Buddhism and biblical teachings: the Holy Spirit and mindfulness, the Kingdom of Heaven and deep presence, and more. Brother Thomas Merton, of note, praised Thay’s lifelong dedication to bridge building.

Absolutely! You can explore this online retreat risk-free for an entire year. If it fails to meet your expectations for any reason, simply contact Sounds True’s customer service for a full refund (contact us at 800-333-9185 or support@soundstrue.com).
