The People’s Inauguration Kickoff

Upgrade to watch now

with Baratunde Thurston, Ari Afsar, and special guests
To kick off our journey into revolutionary love, join Valarie, Baratunde Thurston, Ari Afsar, and special guests for a nationwide celebration of healing, inspiration, art, and music as we reaffirm our commitment to a nation with liberty and justice for all.

Baratunde Thurston

Baratunde Thurston

Baratunde Thurston is an Emmy-nominated host who has worked for The Onion, produced for The Daily Show, advised the Obama White House, and wrote the New York Times bestseller How to Be Black. He’s the executive producer and host of two podcasts, How to Citizen with Baratunde and We’re Having a Moment, which CNET called “the most important podcast of 2020.” He’s also the creator/host of Live on Lockdown. In 2019 he delivered what MSNBC’s Brian Williams called “one of the greatest TED Talks of all time.” A rare leader at the intersection of race, technology, and democracy, Baratunde is using his unique blend of insight, humor, and empathy to help us understand this revolutionary moment.

Ari Afsar

Ari Afsar

Ari Afsar is a singer/songwriter with placements on ABC, Disney, and Amazon. A graduate in ethnomusicology from UCLA, Afsar created the concept album We Won’t Sleep (Songs from the Musical “Jeannette”), which was recently distributed by Sony Masterworks. Her musical, Jeannette, about the first woman elected to Congress, was developed at the O’Neill National Music Theater Conference, where Afsar won the Lyricist Award. She has opened for Michelle Obama, presented before Gloria Steinem, and opened at the ACLU national conference. Afsar was the original Eliza in Chicago’s Hamilton, Miss California 2010, top 10 at Miss America 2011, and a top 36 American Idol alum. She cofounded Until We Do It, providing masks to communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

    • Jaclyn @ Sounds True says:

      “I, (insert name),
      do solemnly vow
that I will faithfully execute my role
      in healing, reimagining, and rebuilding
      our country,
and will to the best of my ability,
      preserve, protect, and defend
      dignity, justice, and joy
for myself and for all around me,
and that I will do so with love.”

  • Rachel Neumann says:

    GOOD

  • Heidi Engstrom Tessmer says:

What an honor to witness!! Thank you – I took my vow of ministry in June and Valerie touched me so much this past year that My vow included the line – ” I see no stranger and to embrace wholeness by being curious about the story not seen or heard” I will be taking my oath with my daughter this afternoon. Blessings and love to all

  • Gail says:

can we see written versions of the oaths so we have a template to create our own-personalize etc

    • Jaclyn @ Sounds True says:

      “I, (insert name),

that I will faithfully execute my role
      in healing, reimagining, and rebuilding

  • Reid Smithdeal says:

will there be a transcript? I would like to get copies of each person’s oath. Much in the oaths resonated with me.

  • jia says:

It’s really beautiful, inspiring and moving! even I am not American, I feel touched and find the hope for the birth of a new America, and the hope for the world. Thanks for the sharing!

  • CJ Crim says:

Hello to the organizers. This is a wonderful event. I would love to offer the attendees a free screening of Resisterhood, an award-winning documentary about the power of women, hope, and resistance. It follows 6 diverse activists as they stand up to the Trump administration during its first 2 years. You can see the trailer at http://www.ResisterhoodDoc.com

  • Heather says:

    Thank you

  • Dona Carbone says:

What is the name of the book from Grover High? I want to read it.

  • Thomas Manaugh says:

Amber, please clarify your oath to support indigenous sovereignty. That was the kind of sovereignty proclaimed by Mugabe to dismiss criticism of his absolute autocracy from sources outside of the borders of Zimbabwe.

  • Joan McP says:

I am 79 years old….seems this is what I have waited for all of my adult life!!! Person by person as we take this OATH of commitment to a revolution of LOVE–this is a path to healing!!! AND I can participate even at my age by taking this oath while I sit with candle lit in my home. I refuse to be on Facebook–and am not on other social media–very sad that I will not be able to participate in the next 10 days. But I will participate in the Oath that I can read each day.

  • Bewell says:

Could you post the speakers’ names when they start to speak? I would love to know how to spell their names.

    • Jaclyn @ Sounds True says:

Hi Bewell! We’ve heard from Valarie Kaur, Baratunde Thurston, Allie Young, Brynn Saito, Neal Katyal, Ai-jen Poo, Amber Starks, Eric Parrie, and Bamby Salcedo.

  • Sharleen says:

Do you have a list of the special guests? I am sure I am not spelling their names right. Thank you.

    • Jaclyn @ Sounds True says:

Hi Sharleen! We’ve heard from Valarie Kaur, Baratunde Thurston, Allie Young, Brynn Saito, Neal Katyal, Ai-jen Poo, Amber Starks, Eric Parrie, and Bamby Salcedo.

  • Deborah says:

Can’t get live. Its 12:18 EST

  • elisabeth carter says:

Man that poem is awesome! Can we get a copy?? 💜💜💜

    • Marky says:

Yes, please. Am so pleased to meet everyone who presented today, and Brynn Saito’s poem set the tone for me with its inclusiveness of experience.. From fields of war to winter landscapes, wherever we are, the truth of our beingness will set us free. Count me in, folks!

  • Daryll says:

Can we please stop saying “White Supremist”, as there is nothing supreme about their message,

    • Bewell says:

I agree. We need a new term. It assumes they are correct.

    • Bewell says:

      Maybe… White Fragilists?

    • Lo says:

What about White Racist? That’s what they are.

    • danie says:

This is a battle for cultural dignity and respect for everyone — however each of us goes about fighting for respect…… How about moving away from the demonizing (which is truly not easy) into other languaging? White defenders, White proponents, White loyalists, White believers —— none of these are meant to mean I (we) agree with them……but it is a gesture of hope — that offering respect may diminish the deep seated rage and fear driving them.

  • Elaine M. Kolb says:

It started at 12 :00 and ended at 1:00 pm. I pushed the word Kick Off and went in. I too thought it was going to be available all day for ten days. What I experienced during that profound hour was my Creator has answered my ? Why can’t people see that we are all one with many colors. Our Creator made us the same with incredible unique gifts. I liken us to eggs, some are brown, some beige, white And, even blue from the Areconda chickens. We make a beautiful picture with all of our colors. Love that we can take our own oath here to support this movement into birth, finally, so we’re all equal with equal rights. Keep trying to get in – it is so They posted that you can text to: wethepeople at 97483. Love to all.
