Today’s teaching and guided practice session introduce Tara’s signature “RAIN” meditation, created specifically to address emotional suffering whenever it arises.
Write a letter of compassion from your future bodhisattva self to the place in you that is struggling with difficult emotions like hurt, fear, loneliness, or shame. We’d be honored to hear about your experience with today’s challenge in our Facebook community.
Dr. Kristin Neff is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion over 15 years ago. In this interview, Tara Brach speaks with Dr. Neff about how she became involved in the study of self-compassion and how each one of us can cultivate this life-saving skill.
Session highlights:
Kristin Neff, PhD, is an associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to writing numerous academic articles and book chapters on the topic, she is author of the new book Fierce Self-Compassion. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, which is taught by thousands of teachers worldwide.

For me, it’s a firm enforcement of emotional boundaries: not owning other’s issues, not feeling compelled when I’m feeling overstretched. And disrupting status quo and standing up for what’s right in relationships and worldly issues. In my life, the yin/yang can get out of balance in the hesitation/over-activation of my expression, which can turn to hurt to myself, lack of consideration to others, missed opportunities to be really heard and understood, missed opportunities to part of something.
Joanie, you’ve captured my thoughts and reaction to the challenge of balance bewteen yin/yang exactly. Thank you.
I understand this Joanie. It often feels irrevocable- difficult to apologize for. And it follows you.
great conversation, thank you
Thank you both. Blasted that notion I had, that if I just kept working on myself I could stop feeling negative emotions. I need to really feel what is real and acknowledge it…… I plan to get in touch with My Momma bearin the future.
I relate to thinking if I meditated enough or was emotionally healthy, that would mean being at peace most all of the time. Not quite realistic 😉
So interesting! I’m a Quaker (basically the closest you can get to Bhuddism in Western culture..) and so many of the ideas and principles are so similar to what both Tara and Kristen talk about. I’m was so pleased (and amused) to hear Kristen talk about Momma Bear…
Yes! “What a total pleasure” indeed! Thank you both!
