john a. powell, PhD
Professor of law, professor of African American studies and ethnic studies
In the West, and in the United States in particular, we live largely isolated and separated lives. On fundamental levels, we feel a sense of separation from spirit and the earth, and our minds and bodies are viewed as separate entities. Then, in daily life, society perpetuates the felt sense that we are separate from each other based on race, gender, religion, and so much more. In this presentation, Dr. john a. powell explores how this feeling of separation both is made worse by trauma and can be a cause of trauma itself, offering clear guidelines for how we can build bridges back to belonging.
Session Highlights:
Dr. john a. powell is director of the Othering and Belonging Institute and professor of law, African American studies, and ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He was previously the executive director at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University and, prior to that, the founder and director of the Institute on Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota. Dr. powell formerly served as the national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union. He is a cofounder of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council, and he serves on the boards of several national and international organizations. Dr. powell led the development of an “opportunity-based” model that connects affordable housing to education, health, health care, and employment, and he is well known for his work developing the frameworks of “targeted universalism” and “othering and belonging” to effect equity-based interventions. He has taught at numerous law schools, including Harvard and Columbia University. His latest book is Racing to Justice: Transforming Our Conceptions of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society.
Thomas Hübl
Founder of the Academy of Inner Science
We often think of trauma as a personal experience, but there is also a collective dimension that we are most often unaware of. Thomas Hübl will explore how these entangled traumas live inside each of us and how we can come together to consciously work on healing our collective traumas—both the crises we currently face and the traumas inherited from generations past. By learning to cultivate collective presence and group coherence, we can break through hidden trauma layers and unlock our higher capacities for collective intelligence, insight, and innovation.
Session Highlights:
Thomas Hübl is a teacher, author, and founder of the Academy of Inner Science. His teaching integrates the core insights of the great wisdom traditions with the discoveries of contemporary science. Hübl’s work combines somatic awareness practices, advanced meditative practices, and transformational processes that address both individual and collective trauma, opening the potential for growth and healing. Since 2004, Hübl has worked with tens of thousands of people worldwide through workshops, multiyear training programs, and online courses. He has guided large-scale healing events that have brought together thousands of Germans and Israelis to acknowledge, face, and heal the cultural shadow left by the Holocaust. He is also the founder of the nonprofit Pocket Project, which aims to increase awareness and understanding of collective trauma and reduce its effects. Hübl’s book Healing Collective Trauma will be published in fall 2020.

This has truly been an amazing 10 days, and I will be digesting and assimilating what I have heard here for weeks to come. The talks that most deeply moved me were the ones by Justin Michael Williams, Monica Sharma, Traci Ishigo, Pat Mcabe and John Powell. Their presentations made me think of not only how I resolve and integrate my own struggles but how I can use that experience and the insights to connect with and support others in their own journeys. Ultimately it was a reaffirmation for me of our deep and abiding need for connection, and the power of listening, of being willing to be vulnerable and to be present and witness each other’s pain and the depth of personal and collective healing that can come from this way of being. Thank you to Dr Rutstein and the Sounds True organisation for an amazing, enligntening and transformative summit.
Entire summit was wonderful! john a. powell”s talk resonated so very strongly with me. I had tears of joy that the road to better interpersonal relations is so very simple and yet so very profound.
Thank you so much for such amazing summit. A warm hug from Peru
Excellent trauma summit giving a taster of the rich variety of therapeutic interventions available. An opportunity to reflect as a Professional on the impact and history of trauma individually and collectively
Thank you so much for all and each of the talks. Opened my mind and heart to new ways of looking, doing and working. I am so grateful
Just want to say thank you so so much to all the incredible speakers and to Jeffery for organising this amazing summit. Feeling truly blessed and full of gratitude!
Absolutely brilliant! A lot of valuable information laid out simply and clearly to be able to absorb it. I’m very grateful to have been given the access to it. Thank you very much!
Hi Jeffrey! I do not have words enouth to say thank you for you and all the participants of this summit! I am abroad, here in Brazil, and was so happy to have the opportunity to see all this beautiful and amazing work you shared with us. Thank you ! Thank you for your work and making possible and sharing all these talks.
So much gratitude! The talks are truly helpful on my journey of embodied self realization and healing!
A hearty thank you to Sound True for organizing the Trauma Skills Summit, and to the host and participants for donating their time to an important topic. I appreciate the effort to diversify the topics within the trauma field, and that of the presenters, which were inclusive of different ages, backgrounds, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnicity to name a few. Healing trauma has the capacity to transform our lives, and I appreciate learning new material to do that for myself and by extension for my community. Thank you for this free event!
I found myself facing a wall re where to go with my healing journey around a very traumatic past. I felt broken and deeply wounded. I went on my knees and asked the universe to direct me. The next day I found myself responding to an Instagram advertisement; something I have never done before and signing up for this summit. I am so grateful. It has been profound and enriching and intense. I elected to set aside the ten days solely for this healing and reflected deeply on what came up for me. I feel the tentative steps of buds growing on my withered vine…I feel connected, I feel human, I feel belonging and I see a road ahead upon which I can work to restore my dignity, safety and sense of self. Thank you is too small a word really. My humble and profound gratitude to you all.
Thank you so much. I experienced a misadventure in Surgery to my left face

Other wise fit and well.
What a great 10 days. I found the information very insightful.
Thank you, Sounds True, for this marvelous event! And to Dr. Powell, special thanks for your insightful and inspiring message. It touched me very deeply.
So glad I was able to hear these last speakers. Such a wonderful way to wrap up this summit. John Powell’s talk was so insightful to me personally. Denying a person their full humanity; resiliency is a team sport; healing trauma through interconnectedness and belonging and “I see you” are now a part of my understanding. Thank you for that!
Thomas Hubl, The trauma atmosphere is a new concept of understanding for me. Thank you!
I found myself wondering this morning how the summit would wrap up. Both speakers today have been amazing: they were so honest and sincere;. and I’m deeply touched by their wisdom and humanity. I’m full of gratitude to Jeffery and the Sounds True organization for offering these last 10 days to shine the light on the pervasiveness of all kinds of trauma, both individual and collective. I’ve learned so much. I’ll be processing all of this for some time. I hope we can heal ourselves, each other, our communities, our cities, states, nations and the world….and give due respect to all sentient beings. When we can nurture and maintain balance and harmony in ourselves, it will reflect in our environment. Aum.
I was moved by John Powell stories that invite me to engage and practice bridging instead of breaking.
I cried when he talked about the 4th social category – people we don´t like and think aren´t competent. I saw myself doing exactly that in my past out of fear or disgust. This really opened my awareness towards how I see homeless people and increased my responsability in avoiding to inflict more trauma from my segregation and change my behaviour to a more inclusive one – this person is as human as I am, so at least I will do my best to build a small bridge towards his/her humanity and allow the God in me to see The God in him/her. Thank you for this powerful insight.
Thank you Jeffrey for your relevant questions to todays guest – in Thomas case your questions were my questions also, namely about group coherence.
Very interesting and helping. Puts me back « to work » on group trauma.
Reminds me of Bert Hellinger’s family constellation approach.
Thank you Thomas
Thanks a million to Sounds True, to Jeffrey and to all the wonderful presenters. What a beautiful gift during this very difficult time. I learned a lot. Peace to all!
Thank you for giving me a deeper understanding of collective healing and the power of co-regulation and group resonance
I spent much of my life in anxiety and fear. The contemplative practice and wisdom of the speakers in this summit gives me hope and comfort to rest in river of universal positive energy and love.
A big Thank you for the great inspiration that these talks were for me! They offered a lot of insight and it’s good to see the different angels of the theory and the many ways to coöperate with it and Finally the tools to make a change. Together we know much more! Thank you! Ilse from Belgium
Ja this is a very enlightening interview and I like very much all of the summits parts so far. I hope that the collective awareness will increase for this topic – I sense the global crisis as a chance . Thank you !
So thankful for this amazing summit and all of the sessions I have watched so far.
Thank you John. I love your bridging practice and insights. It really opened up a door in my journey to explore “not seeing” narcissistic racists. I do believe it cuts off parts of me. Thank you for the beautiful gift. (Of myself 💜🌈😉)
Wow! I have tears in my eyes after listening to Dr. John A. Powell. I have to admit, I haven’t watched any others, and have just ignored my in box of late. But the universe works this way. My 9 year old son is in despair for many reasons, but Dr. Powell has given me hope to help build small bridges to re-connect to the earth, universe, society. His wish for his children to engage. This is powerful. I also really appreciate the host responding with such empathy, sensitivity, and silence sometimes.
I could see this talk alone (and I’m sure many or all of the others) broken down into small bites for children to listen to daily in their zoom classrooms. There are so many messages here, it could be a whole semester of this topic. 10 minutes a day, and building. Small bridge….to bigger bridge.
I’ve searched around on this site and haven’t seen contact information for Dr. Powell. I’d really like to do a zoom session if available. contact information below.
Namaste.
Absolutely loved the entire programme. But I am exhausted after it. I need to be kind to myself now and rest for a while.
i am so greatful for this summit. it was an amazing experience. god bless you! world as one being
Great thanks to the Summit. It’s impressive to the high quality of all speakers. I learned a lot and interestedly find that much commonalities of many sharing.
Thank you so much for this enlightening and immersive journey. May we all take away the love that was offered.
I also wanna say thank you to john for sharing your vulnerable stories, that reminds me that we are all human. I thought people like you wouldn’t make such mistakes 😀 but truly you show what it means to a human. Thank you and thank you
Nice closing presentations for the summit! Yes trauma is collective! Well done Jeffrey and Sounds True people. I’ve watched all the presentations and I’ve learned so much. Thank you to all speakers for sharing your wisdom
Wonderful information and experiential work
I have found this summit has given me so much insight and understanding into my childhood trauma and how that fuelled teenage and adult behaviour, resulting in more trauma. To have explained what has happened to your brain, body and emotions is the most empowering experience.
Would love to know if there is an online community where we could discuss the content of this summit further with other people.
Thank you so much for these 10 days, it has been quite a journey.
I would join that….let’s start it?
Thank you very, very much for this entire summit. I’m taking so much away from this, not just as a therapist but also as an individual. Truly incredible.
Truly inspirational bridging the gap of trauma
Wonderful week. Thank you so much!
The summit was superb. I could never understand why i wasn’t making progress in healing myself despite following mindfulness, meditation, gratitude etc since a couple of years. The summit clarified what was missing. Thanks massively for the outstanding summit.
Thank you sooo much for the summit! So much useful information and so many insights. A lot to think about… Thank you, Sounds True and all the speakers!
Wow awesome 10 days !
So much gratitude and regard for the work and incredible presence of Jefferies hosting…. The awareness in bringing such relevant and clarifying questions to “fill out” the presentations blew me away every time. His work added so much value to each piece, and provided additional digestive enzymes for the integration of the material. Sounds True are truly waking up the world with this fine informative and so so relevant summit.. Thankyou to all the amazing speakers for time and genuine heartfelt committment to the healing of our planet….
Just want to warmly say Thank You! for this Trauma Skills Summit.
It has been a breathtaking journey and has brought many valuable insights.
I just wish the pace had been a bit slower – maybe one interview a day instead of two – I havn’t been able to listen to all of the content. And even if I’d had, I’d still need the time to digest.
Anyway – great presentations and such a wonderful initiative as a whole!
Loving, warm and swedish regards
Annelie Brodin
